Potential applications: The main applications of folic acid are prevention of neural tube defects, atherosclerosis (reduces elevated homocysteine levels), osteoporosis, and cervical dysplasia. Other applications include depression, anemia, crohn’s disease, fatigue, restless leg syndrome, epilepsy, fatigue, and infertility. Known Contraindications: High doses of folic acid should be used with caution in epileptics as it may increase the risk of seizures. Those with allergy or intolerance to citrus fruits including lemons should not use, or use with caution. Recommended use: Those following a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle, the elderly, those taking diabetic medication, neuropathy, fatigue, cognition and mood. Safety: Generally considered safe and well tolerated. Not recommended during pregnancy or lactation Contraindications : None known. Drug interactions : Folic acid may mask B12 deficiency (25). Those on anti-diabetic drugs such as Metformin should supplement with B12 and folic acid (26). Contraceptive drugs can deplete B12 levels (reference [this may be only in older, higher dose OCP]).
